Allenby Neighbourhood Guide

Welcome to Allenby:

Allenby is a small but thriving borough nestled in between Briar Hill Avenue and Eglinton Avenue West to the north and south, respectively; and Latimer Avenue and Avenue Road to the west and east. If you’re looking for a tranquil, residential neighbourhood full of family-friendly activities and entertainment, Allenby fits the bill. You’ll find top-notch education, including a French immersion school, shopping that will knock your socks off (but don’t worry, you can buy more), convenient public transit, and a rich history reflected in the architecture of the homes and community buildings.

Highlights:

Family-oriented community with a strong emphasis on education. Ideal for new or growing families with school-aged children. Great commute times to Downtown. A beautiful and quiet area which still has excellent bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Neighbours:

Neighbours are friendly and residents are typically middle-aged couples with school-aged children.
Residential and calm. However, businesses stay away from The Eglinton Way, which offers nine blocks of shops and restaurants, like Room 29 and Burger Shack. If you’re looking for a thriving nightclub scene or a bustling city vibe, you will not find it here.

What you'll wall in love with:

If you’re looking for a tranquil, residential neighbourhood full of family-friendly activities and entertainment, Allenby fits the bill. You’ll find top-notch education, including a French immersion school, shopping that will knock your socks off (but don’t worry, you can buy more), convenient public transit, and a rich history reflected in the architecture of the homes and community buildings.

Prices:

The average price of a home in Allenby is $1.4 million, which is up 12 percent from last year. Prices are expected to keep rising, especially once the Line 5 Eglinton (a future light rail transit line now under construction) is complete.  Currently the average price for 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom semi detached home is around $1M, for a Tudor-style 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home ranging from $1.1M to $1.6M, whereas prices executive homes with 3+2 bedroom, 4 bathrooms start at $1.7M.

House Styles:

Mainly detached, historic Tudor-style homes from the 1930s and 1940 and bungalows. You’ll also find smaller semi-detached and detached homes, and executive homes with large properties. Tudor-style and executive homes are spacious and offer lots of green space on the properties. Bungalows and similarly sized homes also offer a good amount of space for an urban setting, but not as much as Tudor-style and executive homes. Contact an agent to see one of the unique properties available in the area.

Life Style:

Allenby is generally a quiet area, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in fun activities for the whole family. This is especially true at the North Toronto Memorial Community Recreation Centre, located on Eglinton Avenue West.

For sports fans, the centre is equipped with a gymnasium, a track for walking, a weight room, and two ice rinks, which convert into tennis courts in the summer. In addition, the community centre is located near Eglinton Park, where you’ll find a baseball diamond and a soccer field.

If sports aren’t your thing, the centre also has several multipurpose rooms and a large lobby to host events and gatherings.

Allenby is very close to the popular Beltline Trail. This 9-kilometre trail is easily accessible via Chaplin Avenue, just south of Eglinton Avenue. This trail is perfect for walking, running and cycling, and for history buffs exploring, as the trail follows the old track of the Toronto Belt Line Railway.

Think you need to be downtown for the best shops and restaurants? Think again, because right on the edge of Allenby is the Eglinton Way. Located on Eglinton Avenue West, The Eglinton Way is pedestrian-friendly and home to the historic theatre, The Eglinton Grand.

Schools:

Education and childcare are top priorities for those living in Allenby.

Allenby Junior Public School is one of the highest rated schools in Ontario (101st) and received a rating of 8.6 out of 10 by the Fraser Institute. The school houses grades junior kindergarten to grade six.

One of the most attractive features of Allenby Junior Public School is the French immersion program, which is available to all students as of senior kindergarten.

Allenby Junior Public School also has a daycare service for children of all ages, the Allenby Daycare. The daycare offers a variety of services to best fit your and your child’s needs, focusing on age-appropriate learning activities and games.

The Allenby Daycare offers full-day services to toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners. They also offer after-school services for school-aged children. The daycare is open year-round, save two weeks in August.

Other schools in the surrounding area include Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School on Avenue Road and Northern Secondary School, which is a little further outside of Allenby on Mount Pleasant Road.

A little bit of history:

Allenby’s history dates back to the 1400s, when it was a Huron settlement. The tribe remained there until the early 1700s. Though no one is living in Longhouses anymore, the Allenby Junior Public School was built on a hill made by the Huron Tribe, which was used to bury their stock of food.

In 1920, the neighbourhood began to take its present shape. Though homes have been renovated over the years, many owners choose to keep the historic façade of their Tudor homes intact.

The neighbourhood’s original architects wanted to reflect a sense of community through the style of the homes. For that reason, many homes will evoke the same sort of feelings, without being carbon copies of one another.

The Commute:

Drivers are a 15-minute drive away from the 401 and the Allen Expressway. Downtown Toronto is just a 20-minute drive.

Those commuting by public transit have plenty of options to get downtown. Buses run frequently along Eglinton Avenue and Avenue Road, which connect to the Eglinton Station on Line 1 Yonge-University.

Allenby to Eglinton Station:

  •         Bus: 13 minutes
  •         Walking: 20 minutes
  •         Car: 5 minutes
  •         Bike: 7 minutes

Public transportation will only draw more people to the area when Line 5 Eglinton is completed. The line will run right by Allenby.

Other points of interest:

  •         Union Station: 40 minutes by bus and subway, 20 minutes by car, 30 minutes by bike
  •         Bloor-Yonge Station: 30 minutes by bus and subway, 13 minutes by car, 22 minutes by bike
